Chianti DOCG set to include rosé among other changes
Chianti DOCG is undergoing its most significant rule overhaul in years, and there's a lot to unpack. The biggest news is the creation of an official Chianti Rosé category with its own production rules and early December release date, meaning rosé can now carry sub-zone designations just like the reds. Producers are getting more blending flexibility too, with the Sangiovese minimum dropping from 70% to 60%, though Cabernet varieties are being capped at 15%. The region's also tightening vineyard standards, introducing a new Terre di Vinci sub-zone, and changing how surplus yields are handled, so only the excess loses appellation status rather than the whole batch.
